Only a few months ago there was a report of a surfer being bitten by a shark in Balian, and today we received a similar report from our friend Michael Trott from Istana Balian.

With the recent rains producing a lot of river run-off, the water has been murky around Balian. This morning the river water surged out to meet a dropping tide creating the usual brown water we are all too familiar with in the wet season here in Balian. An eyewitness, also a surfer, reported he had the usual feeling of slight unease while surfing unclear water, when a fellow surfer was bitten in the forearm by a seemingly small shark.

The creature was clearly trawling the river run-off for a snack, according to the surfers who were there, and they are confident it was a case of mistaken identity and not a reason to stop surfing the well-known spot.

The victim was taken to hospital here in Bali and is expected to make a full recovery. We wish him well and hope he’s back out in the water with us soon.

The boys who were out with him this morning were back in the water in Balian this afternoon enjoying the idyllic spot and clearly not fazed by this incident.
