Young surfer saves fisherman at deadly Salmon Holes

Graham Drew’s family were grief stricken when they lost Nathan Drew to a fishing accident at the Salmon Holes in September 2003. The Drew family vowed that no family should ever have to go through that again.

They raised some money, bought life vests and started promoting Fishing Safety on the south Coast.

Imagine how Graham Drew felt when he was at the Salmon Holes last weekend and witnessed a fisherman, casting his rod only inches from the slippery black rocks, slip, fall, and disappear into the water. Hear Graham’s response.

Glenn Vitaljich was fishing when he slipped in. As he tells the story, he says he thought his life might be ending.

The late Nathan Drew

Thomas Anderson and Max Groszewski were body-boarding when they heard the call for help. If they hadn’t been there, Glenn probably wouldn’t be with us today.

According to Thomas, some of the fishermen and those on the beach didn’t lift a finger to help… or acknowledge the efforts of the surfers. Listen to Thomas’s story here.
