Photos: Sumatra’s Bounty – Bay of Plenty

Far far away, off the coast of Indonesia’s Western most island, lie a cluster of islands still relatively undisturbed by, well, pretty much anything, let alone surfing tourism.  Amidst the bounty of the isles, we ventured to a particular bay which plays host to plenty of different breaks.

There are lefts and rights, and a dazzling reef, which at times mesmerized a bit too much; such are the sacrifices we are happy to make to surf uncrowded perfection.  While we were there the surf ranged from 2 to 5 ft and was spectacular in all sizes, catering to most abilities and appetites for risk.

From comfortable carving to backdoor barrels into a dry inside section; the place has it all. With eagles soaring above and swooping down for an occasional fish, turtles pottering about in the line-up, and water so crystalline a snorkel mask feels redundant, even non-surfers are kept plenty busy.
