There could soon be a new surfers’ paradise on the Gold Coast – 30 minute’s drive from the nearest beach. A company says it’s close to striking a deal with world champion surfer Kelly Slater’s business, which would bring the world’s first endless wave to a coast estate.
LM Investment Management Ltd says it has a memorandum of understanding with the Kelly Slater Wave Company to build its patented wave pool at Maddison Estate, at Pimpama, 20km from the nearest beach.
LM Investment is behind the estate, currently under construction.
Slater’s unique round pool concept has waves circling an island, in theory giving surfers a never-ending ride.
LM Investment project director Luke Barnett says it’s as close as anyone’s been to getting the wave pool built.
“Obviously it would be fantastic for the development but I think at a wider level for Queensland and the Gold Coast it would be another tourist attraction,” he told AAP.
“There are other wave pools in the world throughout Asia and the Middle East … but certainly this would be a world first.”
LM Investments has agreed to investigate site locations and the feasibility of installing the pool.
He says negotiations about its cost are confidential.
Earlier this week, Paul Pisasale, mayor of Ipswich, west of Brisbane, said he would vie for a surfing wave pool in his city, which is 100km from the surf.
