Surfers rage over cruise ship terminal plans

Surfers from around the world will boycott the Gold Coast if a cruise ship terminal is built at Tugun, a national surfing body says.

Surfrider Foundation national board member Brendan Donohoe said a boycott would result if the surf break at Kirra was “destroyed” by a cruise ship terminal at Tugun.

The $200 million Tugun proposal, the brainchild of billionaire Bob Ell of Leda Group, includes three hotels, a casino, three terminal berths, a water park, an underwater observatory, new North Kirra surf club and a superyacht marina. It would create hundreds of jobs.

Mr Donohoe said he feared the development would change wave patterns and in effect wipe out the wave at Kirra.
