Solid 8-to-10 foot sets reel down from No Man’s Land to Laceration’s Reef
On Monday September 3rd all surfers in Indonesia would awake to the sound of the ocean thundering across all of her reefs. As line-ups slowly became over crowded with professional and free surfers – this would be the day to be a LST (Lembongan Surf Team) rider.
After enduring small surf for the 2012 LST annual contest, Billabong along with LST contest director, Wayan Lena, made the decision to reward the boys with an expression session; for their dedication of weekly beach clean-ups and the preservation of their worldwide known coral reefs.
With only 4 boys in the line-up at a time and solid 8-10ft sets reeling down the reef from “No-man’s land” too deliver long hollow barrels over the famous “Laceration’s” reef, they were blessed by the Gods, and envied by all other surfers on the island this day.
Competitors would immediately position themselves after watching boats crossing the channel too Sanur, disappear from total view, hidden by the horizon, only to emerge moments later, manifested into every surfers dream. With deep takeoffs and judges counting barrel time by the seconds of the clock – it would seem as if some of the boys were magicians on this day, disappearing from everyone’s sight and only coming into view once again after traveling past the “Bali Hai” pontoon. Each heat would see barrels being claimed, as 2,000,000rp was up for grabs, for the highest score of all heats.
Billabong team rider Agus Frimanto lead the charge from the 1st heat of the day with a total score of 28.5 praying that this would be his day. With heats to follow comprising of past LST champions such as Werdi, Balon & Widi and ISC tour competitors like Robott from Oakley and Pulu from Rip Curl, each every wave saw commitment and courage being tested, until the final horn sounded and scores tallied. With a score of 28.7, the Rp 2,000,000 prize would be presented to Pulu (Putra Herwaman) by Agus Frimanto from Billabong.
LST would like to thank Billabong for their recognition of LST’s environmental concerns; and also to Kodul of “Lembongan Reef bar & restaurant” for providing assistance for the event and celebrations that followed.
