Friendly and exciting day at Rip Curl GromSearch Canggu
IndoSurfLife.com | 10 March, 2013 | Canggu, Bali: Rip Curl Gromsearch was back last weekend in Canggu under the hot sun of Echobeach. The waves were of perfect size for all the grommets, and some barrels showed up to provide the Groms with some challenging conditions.
A total of 50 of the best Groms from all over Indonesia came to win a place to guarantee them a spot straight to the National Finals in Bali later this year. Contestants were treated to near perfect glassy conditions in the morning giving the surfers opportunity to show their barrel riding skills to the judges. Despite a side shore wind that came up later in the day, the 2 to 3 feet waves still brought great conditions for the Groms to blast some progressive turns.
Rip Curl GromSearch is an international youth surfing competition that brings together Grommets from all over the world, mixing different cultures and creating new friendships. ”The contest welcomed participants from Indonesia but also Japan, Australia, Europe, America, Brazil and Hawaii. It was a very good experience for the Grommets and everyone had a lot of fun. We particularly thank the Canggu Surfing Community for their support to the GromSearch Series” said Rip Curl Team’s Manager Dylan Amar.
In the final of the Under 16 boys’ category, a rampaging Reef Doig from Australia (16 yrs), scored high with 12,1 points, followed by Raju Sena from Padma with 10.7 points, Japanese Keitaro with 10.3 points and local Riman Jayadi (Canggu) with 9.6 points.
Moreover, the four highest placed local surfers in the under 16 division were given one wildcard each by the CSC. As a result, Mega, Raka Suputra, Ivan Sudena and Krisna Putra will join the National Finals in Bali in September, where they will compete to win top place honors of and all expenses paid trip to the World Finals held at Bells Beach Australia in 2014.
Competition was harsh regarding the Under 14 boys’ category. Rip Curl rider Ketut Agus Aditya steamrolled through to an impressive victory (14,6 points) over Manel Peladan, Kian Martin and Arpad.
In the Girls division, Puanani Kusuma blazed through the field with long lasting and powerful turns, followed by Dea Natasya in 2nd, Cinta Hansel 3rd and Maria Kalista in 4th place.
During the expression session, Jeren Kiring together with “Jun” from Canggu won the best tricks of the day thanks to their fast and dynamic air reverses.
The intense day finished with beach games to win prizes from Sponsors and a beach clean up with all the competitors and Groms from the local Canggu Surf Community (CSC). Kids and parents of all ages took part in collecting waste that covered the beach helping to preserve the environment and educate the next generation to take care of our beaches.
