Owen Wright was a serious contender at Pipeline. With the waves forecasted to stay in the excellent range, Wright’s ability in big barrels is a serious threat to anyone who draws him in a heat. Unfortunately for Wright, after a wipeout during a free surf before the Pipe Invitational, he suffered a severe concussion and had to withdraw. It was reported he awoke from a nap after his session disoriented with trouble breathing.
A form surfer throughout the pre-event warm ups, Wright once again navigated an excellent tube ride in the pre-event surf yesterday morning before taking several 15-to-20 foot waves on the head.
According to Rip Curl Team Manager Ryan Fletcher and the World Surf League, Wright’s wipeout gave him minor bleeding in the brain along with the concussion. While he will recover, he has been forced to withdraw from competition.
His position in the Pipe Masters has been filled by Mason Ho, because of Owen’s withdrawal only five surfers will remain in the 2015 WSL title race.
We sure hope Owen makes a full recovery with no complications.
