A 39-year-old woman has died after being attacked by a black marlin fish while snorkeling at Tanjung Karang Beach in Donggala, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Liena, 39, was snorkeling in shallow water with her husband and friends, and was accompanied by diving instructor Abubaker Mide when the attack occurred. Mide saw the approaching fish and attempted to get Liena out of the water, but the fish was too quick and attacked the snorkeler with its sharp bill, according to Grind TV.
“We immediately got her out of water and took her to Kabelota General Hospital in Donggala. She died at the hospital,” said M. Ridwan, a friend of the victim, who also witnessed the incident.
The tragedy is a painful reminder of how dangerous the bills of marlin and swordfish can be.
