Italo Ferreira, the Brazilian Championship Tour surfer known for his explosive surfing and jaw-dropping airs, reportedly injured himself after a landing went wrong.
According to Stab, Ferreira was freesurfing at Duranbah when the injury happened. Couldn’t even walk up the beach and got carted off for an MRI.
In the likely event that Italo can’t surf for the next event or three, Nat Young will get the call-up after finishing just outside of qualification on the CT last year. Due to Owen Wright and Bede Durbidge’s injuries last year, Stu Kennedy and Sebastian Zietz surfed the whole of 2016 via this rule. Both re-qualified because of it.
Ferreira just competed in the first CT event of the 2017 season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, where he finished in the Quarterfinals. In 2016, he finished No. 15 in the world and in 2015, his first year on tour, he earned the WSL’s prestigious Rookie of the Year award. Currently, he sits at equal fifth. It is not clear yet whether he will be able to compete in the next event on tour, the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, in Western Australia, whose waiting period opens March 29. He is currently slated to compete against Julian Wilson and Ethan Ewing in Round One.
