Uber Driver Attacked by Mob in Bali

Ida Kadek Anom (30), a driver with the online transportation service Uber, was badly beaten by a group of men initially reported to be conventional tax drivers upset with the competition posed by online taxis.

Metrobali.com reports that Anom was attacked as he tried to pick up a fare at the Ramada Encore Hotel on Jalan Saraswati Denpasar.

The angry gang not only beat Anom, but also are said to have caused heavy damage to his car as it traveled on Jalan Bidadari III in Seminyak at 6:30 pm on Sunday, April 2, 2017.

The attack was  reported to the North Kuta Police Precinct.

Police say the victim drove to the location of the attack at around 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 3. 2017, to fetch a passenger at the Ramada Encore Hotel.

As he left the hotel with his passenger, the vehicle was stopped by a member of the hotel’s security team accompanied by several conventional taxi drivers who forced the passenger to disembark the vehicle after the driver refused to pay an illegal “fine” of Rp. 500,000 demanded by the men.

When the driver attempted to drive away, the security of the hotel alerted the conventional taxi drivers who the press reported chased after and attacked Anom.

The driver was beaten to the point he required hospitalization while the vehicle was also badly damaged by a group  said to number more than 10.

In a subsequent report by DenPost, police have taken into custody four men believed to have participated in the beating. Now under arrest at the Kuta police precinct are Made Karyawan alias Baglug (24), Ida Bagus Putu Oka Pujana alias Gus Breng (20), Kadek Sulendra Adi Putra alias Kadek Negara (21) and I Kadek Suartawan alias Lembek (27).

The four men were taken into custody on Friday, April 7, 2017.

Police now claim the attack had no connection with rivalry between conventional taxi drivers and online transportation operators, but resulted after Anom’s vehicle struck a number of vehicles while leaving the hotel.

According to police, Anom was driving away at a high rate of speed from the Ramada Encore Hotel where, moments before, he had been confronted by angry conventional taxi drivers for picking up a passenger at the hotel. While driving down a local road, Anom is alleged to have struck several parked cars before running off the road where it hit a garbage bin and a tree.

The men who struck Anom claim they were preventing his escape from the scene of an accident.
