Japanese Surfer Dies After Swept Away By Waves Near Bali Airport

Japanese surfer reportedly drowned near Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport on Sunday. Katayanagi Susumo was caught and dragged in a massive current as he was surfing at Kuta Reef.

The 60-year-old surfer go out on Sunday morning around 6:45am for a surf, and he chose using a boat to reach the break which 500 meters off the coast.

Around 8:05am Susumo was missing. The skipper of the boat, who took him out, raced to Susumu and got him out of the water. He was apparently too late, however, as Susomo could not be resuscitated once he reached the hospital, Coconuts Bali reported.

Badung’s lifeguard brought him to BIMC Hospital in Kuta, but less than an hour after he checked in to the emergency room he was dead.

The cause of death was the inundation of seawater into his body which damaged the function of his lungs.

Susumo was known as a good surfer, he was also worked as a surf instructor.

“This victim was good at surfing. He was a teacher and often a judge. We got that information from his friend,” Denpasar Water Police Chief I Ketut Suparta said.
