J-Bay Goes Wild!

Wednesday’s action at the Corona Open J-Bay got off to a stunning start, as Filipe Toledo delivered the the best aerial surfing ever seen in competition during his do-over battle with Jordy Smith and Julian Wilson. The Brazilian stuck two lofty alley-oops in a row on one wave to earn a perfect 10, and the judges would have handed him a 15 if they could have.

But the big moments kept coming, and every time the crowd figured they’d seen everything a surf event can offer, J-Bay delivered more surprises, including the elimination of John John Florence by rookie Frederico Morais in a crazy Quarterfinal battle. Ronnie Blakey and Peter Mel were joined by Mick Fanning and Shaun Tomson to break it all down.

Frederico Is No Fluke

Frederico “Kikas” Morais took down the reigning World Champ John John Florence in their Round Four matchup yesterday, surfing what was arguably the heat of his life. Today, in a man-on-man heat against the World Champ, John John’s wave selection was on point and he posted two big 9s quite early on to apply pressure to the rookie.

Fred, however, rose to the challenge and selected a beautiful wave to rip it apart and drop a 9.77, the heat’s highest score, answering right back to John John. The Hawaiian continued to flair and slightly improved his situation with a 9.10. With three minutes on the clock and first priority, Fred let go of all the pressure and annihilated a perfect-looking set wave to drop his first 10-point ride in this event, and eliminate Florence.

More shark for Mick Fanning

Big Shark in J-BAY lineup stops competition in quarter final heat 1 of Gabriel Medina and Mick Fanning 2017. Excellent aerial view of the shark cruising the lineup. The shark is not even bothered with a Jetski on top of it. Mick must feel like he is shark attractant at J-bay, after his 2015 super close encounter with a rather friendly shark, when Julian Wilson paddled over to help him out.

You can hear the crowd reaction at 4:20 when they see it in the wave, as the shark went right into the shallows.

Safety Boat Gets Caught Inside Supertubes at Jeffreys Bay

When a huge set wave nearly trapped the safety boat in the impact zone at Jeffreys Bay, they skillfully skirted disaster by ripping their way across the big green wall.
