A Belgium surfer has died off Canggu Beach, in North Kuta when he was struck by lightning on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at approximately 2:15 pm, Bali Discovery reported.
Denis Andre Dasoul (34) was struck by a bolt of lightning during a rainstorm while surfing in front of the Pantai Batu Bolong Temple on Batu Bolong Beach.
RadarBali.com says the man was visiting the beach to take a surfing lesson. The lesson was reportedly suspended by the surfing instructor prior to the accident when a rainstorm descended rapidly on the area. It is not clear if Dasoul was continuing to surf or was headed towards shore when the lightning strike occurred.
The lightning bolt sent the Belgium into the ocean where local residents and tourist visitors pulled the man from the water and called an ambulance to the scene.
Eyewitnesses say the man was unconscious when brought to shore and his chest was blue, presumably from burns suffered in the accident. The instructor also suffered burns on his thigh and left leg from the lightning hit.
Dasoul was staying at a villa on Jalan Pantai Pererenan during his Bali holiday.
