Radical airs, sick barrels, the powerful and stylish surfing being demonstrated belies the contestants’ age.
The waves were 3-4ft with long rippable walls and a few barrels to mix things up. The light onshore breeze cooled off those on the beach but did not take away from the waves quality.
Everyone who goes to Desert Point and sees this kid surf knows he has something special ~ talent, confidence and a sick style. He seems to get better every time I see him surf, even if it’s just been a few weeks.
It’s a machine; the wave comes in a long line, you take off on a shallow and sharp reef and it drains into a barrel that can be longer than 100 meters. No doubt one of the best waves in the Mentawais.
We want to know who will be the future? Who will be taking over down the line? Who are the contenders to be the next top Indonesian surfers?
The best Desert Point I have seen all year! 8 foot barrels holding all the way through, perfect winds and perfect weather.
I headed off to Deserts (my 10th trip there this year) on Monday night after an afternoon shooting Padang – It was a long and tiring trip.
Salini came to Canggu with Puanani they saw the waves and quickly paddled out. The Padma boys were out and they gave all the support to the Surfer Girls cheering them on and giving them some good waves.
Does it signal the end of boat trips in the Mentawais? Imagine if every camp/resort blocks the waves out front for use by their guests only; what would the boats do?
This surfer paid the price. He scored some amazing barrels and took off on a wave in the biggest set of the day but unfortunately he didn’t make it and gave us these amazing images. Enjoy the wipe-out and check-out few waves barrel he did make it.
Keramas with Jay Daves, Torren Martyn, some Bra Boys and local Pepen Hendrik charging the biggest sets or Padang-Padang with Rob Machado, Craig Anderson, Ozzie Wright, Mega Semadhi, Rizal Tanjung and all the rest of Bali. What would be your call?
