Last Thursday the IndoSurfLife.com forecast pointed to a South swell due to arrive on the Balinese Coast. While the conditions did not appear to be the best for Padang, the Rip Curl Cup organization, unwilling to miss even a chance of an epic day at Padang, made the call and at 6:00 am we were there to check what was happening.

When the swell disappears off the map, and the waves are far and few in between, the boats in the Ments head to Telescopes; Another splendid wave in the land of lefts. Named after the view down the barrel it is admittedly rather a perfect wave. When everywhere else was too small we joined the throng of boats for 3-4 ft fun gorged ourselves on barrels.

Lance’s Treasure Trove. Lance’s Left is an oldie but goodie. Traipsing about the Mentawai islands recently, my comrades in arms and myself found ourselves returning to the wave again and again.

Alluring with the promise of a 100m barrel, the stakes run high with its speed and a very dry last section is oh so tempting.

Everybody loves a holiday… particularly if it’s unplanned and coincides with swell. Thursday’s Hari Merah (red day – local jargon for public holiday) saw the swell drop off a bit on the Bukit, but this didn’t stamp out the fun. The annual surfer migration to Bali is in full-swing and the Bukit was swarming with people looking to score a few waves, preferably of the barrel-kind.
