Teahupoo, located on the southwest coast of Tahiti, is world famous for its big-wave surfing. The glassy, barreling waves, which can sometimes reach over 20 feet in height, are what draw surfers from all over the world. Here, Ben Thouard captures Teahupoo magnificently from the underground, as Anthony Walsh and co. take to the shimmering West Bowl.
This is epic. Between Alex Gray, Anthony Walsh, Seth Moniz, 14 barrels, six look backs and the sweet, sweet voice of Bonnie Tyler, it doesn’t get much better. From here on out, if you ever attempt look backs whilst getting barreled, we dare you not to have this song running through your head.
Anthony Walsh is supremely good at three things: Riding barrels, filming it on a GoPro (angles!), and making errbody ill with jealousy. Walsh woke up in a tropical jungle somewhere, ate a pineapple, then went for a marathon session, during which he got more barreled on his first wave than you have in your whole damn life. Those three things tune up in perfect harmony here; two waves filmed at Desert Point during the recent swell that Indo enjoyed. That sound, those colours!
