I sit slumped, fatigued from air travel, gazing aimlessly at my phone screen. I am flicking through images to pass time while I wait for my guests to arrive. A little nervous, a tad excited and quite unsure of what awaits on-board the Aileoita. My legs stick to the faux leather seat in the hotel lobby. Foreign exotic smells waft through the air, circulated by air conditioning that is tricking my body into thinking I am back home and not in a smoke engulfed tropical Sumatra, that I am not. Although we share the Indian Ocean with our Indonesian neighbours I am a far cry from my Western Australian desert shores. A day’s travel from Perth to Padang I find myself pensively waiting to board the boat to set sail on my first Mentawai surf trip as a coach and guide.
It was the first trip of 2016 of Aileoita (aileoita.com), our partner boat. The forecast was not the best, there were a couple of pulses but not a proper solid swell. Every one thought that it would be a chest to head high wavess trip but our surf-guide and photographer was confident there he would […]
During a boat trip to Indonesia, Alana Blanchard, Nikki Van Dijk, and Tyler Wright enjoyed the comforts of a luxurious yacht and the many perfect waves, but they also docked and spent time with some of the rural-living locals. For sure the girls of course scored some of that Indo perfection.
Nomme Mignot ripping some good waves during his Indo boat trip.
Here Felix Leaver during two weeks on a boat trip in Indo. This just looks so fun for 16 years old surfer!
Two recent deaths in the remote Mentawai island chain have highlighted just how dangerous this favourite surfing pilgrimage can be. The first, Ronald Stephen Schneider, 54, from the East Coast of Australia was found dead by friends after being smashed against the reef by heavy surf. He was followed less than a week later by South Australian man, Adam Dube, who was found dead after disappearing during a night swim.
Tim Bisso, 18 years old, just came back from his first trip to the best playground in the world, the Mentawai islands. 12 days on a boat, with perfect waves every morning & every afternoon, is a dream for a surfer, and the best training center for competitors.

Two weeks ago a very motley crew of surfers hopped onboard the Aileoita I in Padang, Sumatra, ready for whatever mother nature and the crew had in store for them. Informed by the latest forecasts the group agreed to heed the surf-guide’s advice and head beyond the well-documented Mentawai islands for the relatively lesser known Telos to the North, to search for waves and avoid crowds.
Our friend Sebastian Imizcoz, just got back from his second trip of 2015 on board of Aileoita 1 and he sent us the report.
