The Rip Curl Padang Cup – Expression Session last Friday While the anticipated swell delivered on Friday, conditions were too inconsistent to run the Padang Cup, so the event organizers utilized the opportunity for an expression session for invitees. The boys clearly enamored with the chance to surf uncrowded Padang, gave us a glimpse of what’s in store for the contest
The brightest stars of the 11th annual Rip Curl Cup took the field in smallish, but perfect Padang Padang barrels today to the backdrop of a picture perfect sunset. Luminaries such as Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright, Bethany Hamilton and the great Rizal Tandjung traded waves with such rookies as Jacob Wilcox and Jack Robinson as the sun dipped near the horizon at one of the most spectacular surf spots in the world. The fearsome Padang Padang reef, the inspiration for the world’s ultimate tuberiding event.
The swell scientists at Surfline, Rip Curl’s official swell forecaster, have been picking the eyes out of each blast of swell that has been pumping out of the deep Indian Ocean and tracking towards Padang-Padang, and while there have been some close calls lately, they still haven’t spotted the perfect swell to give the green light to run the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest.
With a medium sized swell on the approach, Rip Curl will give the competitors a chance to warm up in an Expression Session on Thursday July 10th from 12 noon until dark if Padang-Padang cooperates as expected.
