Considered as one of the best surfers in the world, Dane Reynolds is the embodiment of a surf revival. An aerial, creative surf without compromise. He may even be the best thing to happen to surfing in the last decade. Desillusion Magazine’s editor in chief Sebastien Zanella followed Dane from Hawaii through to his hometown Ventura in California, to get an true insight of his life away from the spotlight.
Kyle Galtes, the common man’s man, mauls Bali without a sponsor. His boards look brown and buckled. The only description provided for this video reads, “kyle galtes is a lobster.” And he’s ripping. We see a little John John Florence in that slob at :47 — so very smooth. This is the best edit of an unsponsored lobster riding a brown, buckled board that you will ever see. Hands down.
What is freedom? It’s a nice idea, but does it actually exist? By its own definition, freedom is the ability to make your own decisions, run your own race – take your own liberties, but is there room for such freedom in modern society? Surfing is the perfect example. It’s a sport, an activity; an expression of freedom, but whilst the surfing dream does still exist, there will always be a cost. You pay for your boards right? Those trunks you wear weren’t free were they? How much do you shell out for a two-hour parking spot at the beach?
Radical airs, sick barrels, the powerful and stylish surfing being demonstrated belies the contestants’ age.
