When the swell disappears off the map, and the waves are far and few in between, the boats in the Ments head to Telescopes; Another splendid wave in the land of lefts. Named after the view down the barrel it is admittedly rather a perfect wave. When everywhere else was too small we joined the throng of boats for 3-4 ft fun gorged ourselves on barrels.
Last season the hard-charging European contingent of Michel Bourez, Nico Von Rupp, Jonathan Gonzalez and Naum Ildefonse got on a boat and went on a tear through the Mentawaiis. They scored fun surf the entire trip and one absolutely perfect day at Greenbush.
In the midst of the surfing Mecca that is the Mentawai, lies a special gem, that is Greenbush. One of the archipelago’s most famous waves, the lefthand barrel machine is as dangerous as it is beautiful. Alluring with the promise of a 100m barrel, the stakes run high with its speed and a very dry last section is oh so tempting.
The Mentawai’s amazing reefs and consistent swell have made the islands a go-to for Aussie surfers’ yearly boat and pro surfers’ photo shoots for some time now. This year got off to a cracking start with a solid Indian Ocean swell in April prompting Shane Dorian to book in some time off and jump on plane to Indo.

King Millenium is a short film showcasing a Mentawais boat trip that Marc Lacomare, Joan Duru, Charly Martin, Alain Riou and Benjamin Sanchis did in April. In a championship battle between the best regular-footer of the event and the best goofy-footer of the event, Lee Wilson (Bali) defeated Garut Widiarta (Bali) to claim the inaugural Rip Curl Pro Mentawai in pumping 3-foot Macaronis.
Macaronis lived up to the hype on Thursday, as the most fun lefthander in the world delivered a veritable highlight reel of surfing action on the opening day of the 2012 Rip Curl Pro Mentawai 6-star Coca-Cola ISC/ASC sanctioned professional surf competition in the wave playground of the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia. Men’s Rounds 1 and 2 and Women’s Round 1 were completed on Thursday.
