Varazze (Italy’s north coast) is one of the few places in the world, if not the only one, where you can really surf at night. With powerful 8000W floodlights positioned right on the jetty in front of the main peak, you can extends your session in the water after the sunset, when often you’ll find the best waves. The sea stretches, crowding decreases and the wind turns from the ground shaping the perfect waves that made famous the main peak of Varazze worldwide. During a nice winter swell, Roberto D’Amico has been waiting for the headlights to light up to extend its session after sunset until late at night, at first sharing the line up with a few other surfers until he left completely alone in the water and free to surf the best waves of the day … or night.
In partnership with a range of leading technical suppliers, Wavegarden is refining their ability to light up facilities at night which, apart from making spectacular imagery, will allow surfers to catch waves before or after work, or school, especially in winter months when daylight is limited.
On a dark February evening on the moroccan coat, we saw some strange humanoid entities, they were wearing suits that seems to affect surrounding lights. Just a little bit of reverse-gravitational play (for enhancing the waves of course), light up boards, futuristic music that makes absolutely no sense, and barreling right points at night in Morocco.
