The brightest stars of the 11th annual Rip Curl Cup took the field in smallish, but perfect Padang Padang barrels today to the backdrop of a picture perfect sunset. Luminaries such as Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright, Bethany Hamilton and the great Rizal Tandjung traded waves with such rookies as Jacob Wilcox and Jack Robinson as the sun dipped near the horizon at one of the most spectacular surf spots in the world. The fearsome Padang Padang reef, the inspiration for the world’s ultimate tuberiding event.
The excitement is building up to a frothy boil as 24 of the world’s best tuberiders stand by ready to take on Bali’s legendary Padang Padang, as the current swell forecast from Surfline shows the best potential yet for a green light in the fourth week of the six week waiting period.
The swell scientists at Surfline, Rip Curl’s official swell forecaster, have been picking the eyes out of each blast of swell that has been pumping out of the deep Indian Ocean and tracking towards Padang-Padang, and while there have been some close calls lately, they still haven’t spotted the perfect swell to give the green light to run the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest.

With a medium sized swell on the approach, Rip Curl will give the competitors a chance to warm up in an Expression Session on Thursday July 10th from 12 noon until dark if Padang-Padang cooperates as expected.
Last Saturday July 5th at Padang-Padang Beach, the traditional opening ceremony for the Rip Curl Cup 2014 kicked off the waiting period that will run until August 17th. One of the many highlights of the program was the announcement of list of lucky 24 competitors who will be surfing Bali’s most iconic barrel almost all to themselves, and the posting of the heat draw.
