The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by BOQ, the opening stop on the Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour, has been called off for the day Sunday, March 8 with minimal surf and a declining swell at Snapper Rocks. With minimal swell on offer through the original competition window, which was slated to end Wednesday, March 11, the WSL has extended the window to now close Friday, March 13, to capitalize on a new forecasted swell.
At only 18, Jeremy Flores was the youngest surfer to be on the WCT, the world’s surfing elite. Surrounded by a team of professionals and an entire nation, Jeremy even won the most prestigious of competitions, at Pipeline Hawaii, in 2010. But the pressure, criticism, and his fiery temperament eroded little by little his hopes of becoming world champion.
It’s all about location, especially in surfing. With small waves and big high tides stalling the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro Gold Coast, contest officials are considering relocating the event from Snapper Rocks to Duranbah (more commonly known as D-Bah). The beach is just southeast of Snapper, around the headland. Officials will make the call whether or not to move Friday morning local time.
Before the Italian prodigy and WQS competitor Leonardo Fioravanti broke his back at Pipeline this winter he sent us a sick video of a recent trip he had taken to Sumbawa to surf Lakey Peak. It was a last-minute trip and Leo got a mixed bag of waves but on a couple of days he straight scored heaving tubes and some fun rights with perfect ramps. Vibes were high at the opening party of the Coolangatta Boardriders store – it was the combination of Quiksilver and Roxy team riders stoking out hundreds of grommets and surf fans at a signing, LeeAnn Curren’s band Betty the Shark and Brisbane band Orphan Orphans channelling the perfect mix of Jim Morrison and Ian Curtis, and the anticipation of the Pro kicking off.
