An all-star cast of alternative surf craft riding sea badgers descends upon Keramas for a good ol’ time of tube ridin’ and lip slidin’. Shot all in one day.
Bucket lists are stupid, because all they really do is set you up for failure. When someone tells me about all the adventurous things they have on their bucket list, I eventually start to imagine them old and gray, lying on their death bed clutching a crinkled up sheet of paper with only a handful of the items checked off.
Busting down the door for our 2nd Under 9’ & Single! In this division at the 9‘ Festival surfers were able to ride anything under 9’ with a single fin. Unsuprisingly the majority of the contestants opted for 70’s style shortboards. Thrown together in two piles of ten for a half hour each, it was more of an expression session than a contest but waves were judged and finalists were made. In the last 30 minutes of the 5th Annual Deus 9’ & Single Festival, 8 single fin shortboarders traded off perfect waves. Each surfer rode a wave on one set alone… 8 waves for 8 surfers in one set! We couldn’t have asked for more.
This humble man goes by the name of Neal Purchase JNR. A smooth, smooth surfer who will give you a great look into how to surf a single fin with power and skill somewhere in Sumatra. It’s a dying age of power and style but we don’t think it will ever become void.

If the surf fin was never invented, we’d all be riding straight to the beach. The fin is designed for control, steering and stability. Pre-fin surfers used to have little control of direction and turn very gradually, if at all.
Watch this clip featuring Ellis Ericson on single fin board. You can see his powerful cutbacks and effortless barrel riding; the barrel at 1:02 just seemed class.
Here’s Alex Knost; a man of alternative surf crafts, threading his way through the barrels of Bali on a single fin, and then heading to the waters of Costa Rica to show off his longboard wave riding skills.
